Sandy Hook is a geological accident of extraordinary consequence. Where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic, it carved out one of the deepest natural ports on the eastern seaboard. The Hook — a barrier spit that curls northward from the Highlands — has been protecting that harbor entrance since before European settlement.
Giovanni da Verrazzano came through in 1525. Henry Hudson anchored in the bay in 1609. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse has burned without interruption since 1764 — the oldest operating lighthouse in America. Twelve million immigrants passed through the harbor between 1892 and 1954, and the hills of Highlands were among the first things they saw.
This pendant is a small piece of that geography. The curve of the Hook, rendered in silver, on a chain long enough to wear close.
